			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p id="top" /><strong>What&#8217;s right with macroeconomics?</strong></p>
<p>When we began to think about this outline, we realized that we had generally stayed away from issues of (more or less) pure theory. This was probably a good idea; neither our purpose nor our audience would be happy with screens full of equations. So we have tried to cull from various suggestions the outline of a conference on basic issues in macroeconomics that can be discussed in our style.</p>
<p>I. The most theoretical: a pro DSGE speaker and an anti-DSGE speaker.</p>
<p>II. The alternative research programs in macroeconomics. For example (a) Behavioral macroeconomics, (b)  Simulation model.</p>
<p>III. The Role of Fiscal Policy. Do real disturbances require real instruments? What is the size of the spending multiplier in modern economies? The Automatic vs Discretionary issue, one on each side.</p>
<p>IV. Round table. Where do we stand? Macro-policy as a political, institutional problem, especially the need for coordination between fiscal and monetary policy among Europe, Asia and U.S. to accommodate distributional effect&#8230;</p>

In 1987, he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for his contributions to economic growth theory, and, in 1999, the U.S. National Medal of Science. He is a former president of the American Academy of Sciences and of the Econometrics Society. He is currently the Robert K. Merton Scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation.</p>

<p><strong>Masahiko Aoki</strong> is professor emeritus of economics at Stanford University. He is the president of the International Economic Association (2008&#8211;2011) and was a former president of the Japanese Economic Association. In 2007, he created the Virtual Center for Advanced Studies in Institutions, based in Tokyo. He founded the Research Centre of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (M.E.T.I.) in 2001 and served as its director until 2004.<br />
Professor Aoki has been an adviser on developmental issues at the World Bank since 1997. He was awarded the Joseph Schumpeter Prize in 1998.</p>
